What Is Round Dance? | |
---|---|
|
There are two distinct categories of Round Dance. Dances in the first category are often considered to be ethnic, folk or country dances, while dances in the second category are more closely related to social ballroom dancing and are choreographed to popular music. American Round Dances are couple dances usually progressing in a counter-clockwise direction around the dance floor. Round dancing differs from free-style ballroom dancing in that each round dance has been fully choreographed ahead of time. Some round dances are mixers in which the couples change partners each time through the dance. In earlier times, dancers did many of the round patterns from memory. In more recent times, a dance “cuer” or leader at the front of the hall prompts the dancers to the steps, much like a contra or square dance caller calls the dance figures in advance. |
